#NYBLOCKBENCH

“Designed in New York, Made in Ciudad Juarez”. Limited edition, each piece is labeled and numbered.

Jorge Urias Studio has created the #NYBLOCKBENCH, a - bench - object - device - sculpture - of intricate structure and design, that takes inspiration from the many unseen interactions that exist within the New York City blocks and the diverse complexity of its inhabitants. The unique qualities of the city blocks, the property lines of various sizes and heights, the recessed perimeters, open and closed spaces, and variations in density, have been interpreted into a pattern that captures the essence within and represents the unseen, expressed throughout the object by perforations and engraved lines.

In 1811 a master plan for the city of New York was enforced, and changed the landscape of the city by bringing the modern rectangular block system we live in. The city underwent metamorphosis, instead of trees and meadows the city surrendered to the power of blocks, predictable and measurable.

The #NYBLOCKBENCH is fabricated in steel, and is proportional to scale of a typical New York city block, so when the user interacts with it, there is a feeling of familiarity with the object. It is a travel in time and urbanism, an ode to the original New York City.
